Master of Public Health

This program will be open for applications at a future date.

The Master of Public Health, with a concentration in Public Health Technology, is a 49-credit two-year degree program. This program was created for students who are seeking robust public health knowledge from a new kind of MPH program - one that knits together core competencies of public health like biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health and policy with elements of engineering, data science, design and entrepreneurship.

This degree is the first in the country to make technology a part of the program’s DNA through transdisciplinary coursework on topics like Artificial Intelligence, design thinking, engineering, and entrepreneurship and innovation, all within the context of public health.

Through the Applied Practice Experience, students will have the opportunity to engage with ASU’s vast network of health partners in Arizona and beyond to develop and deploy public health technologies in real-world settings, from public health departments to industry and non-profits.

In addition to becoming “bilingual” in technology and public health, students will learn to speak the language of policy and business to drive change and impact at scale.

Program description

Degree awarded: MPH

Locally and globally, nothing is more important than protecting the public’s health but across the world, our public health systems are not structured in ways that empower them to swiftly and effectively respond to evolving threats.

The Master of Public Health from the School of Technology for Public Health will prepare a new type of leader, one who is prepared to create innovative solutions by building and deploying advanced technologies for measuring, screening, preventing or intervening in public health.

The program, which emphasizes health promotion and disease prevention, particularly in vulnerable populations, offers coursework that seamlessly weaves together core public health competencies with elements of human-centered technology, including:

  • Data science
  • Design thinking and systems engineering
  • Environmental health
  • Epidemiology and biostatistics
  • Geographic information systems
  • Health policy and ethics
  • Leadership, entrepreneurship and innovation
  • Programming languages
  • Social and behavioral sciences
  • Web / app design

The MPH offers a concentration in Public Health Technology to bridge the disconnect between public health and other historically siloed disciplines to create impact at scale.

Training students to be proficient in public health and technology, however, requires more than classroom-based learning. The School of Technology for Public Health exposes students to a constellation of tools and technologies, and teaches them how to apply these effectively in real-world settings.

Community organizations and transdisciplinary faculty will lead students in an Applied Learning Experience that allows learners to experience real world population health issues while demonstrating public health competencies. An Integrative Learning Experience offers students the opportunity to integrate and synthesize competencies from multiple disciplines.
